Climb the 7 Peaks to ascend more than 7,000m over 160km. The best bit? You get to ride back down.

The 7 Peaks Challenge is Australia’s ultimate self-paced road cycling adventure. Take on limit pushing climbs and thrilling descents as you conquer the summits of Mt Buffalo, Mt Buller, Dinner Plain, Falls Creek, Mt Hotham, Lake Mountain and Mt Baw Baw. Alpine road riding season runs from October - April.

Mt HOTHAM 

Distance 30km, Rise 1,321m, Grade Average 4%, Grade Max 18%

The jewel in the crown of the 7 Peaks Challenge. The only thing more breathtaking than the climb is the mountain views.

Grind the infamous The Meg and CRB Hill climbs and take a breath on the "middle third" to fortify yourself with views across to the Razorback and Feathertop. Celebrate at the top at locals favourite The General.

Your riding base - Mt Hotham or Bright

Falls Creek 

Distance 29.5km, Rise 1,129m, Grade Average 4%, Grade Max 10%

Starting in Mount Beauty, Falls Creek is a 30km test that ramps up the gradient the higher you climb. The first half to Bogong village winds through tall timber and lush tree ferns, but keep some juice in reserve. Once the road markings turn yellow at the bridge you know you're in for some vertical.

Mt Buffalo 

Distance 20.4km, Rise 1,015m, Grade Average 5%, Grade Max 11%

Take a true test of stamina on the High Country peak that records the most ascents year after year, Mt Buffalo. Notorious for its consistent 5% gradient over a full 20km, your reward at the top is sweeping views over beautiful Bright. Ride at dawn or in the evening for the best chance of a car-free run, especially in summer.

MT BULLER 

Distance 15.3km, Rise 921m, Grade Average 6.2%, Grade Max 13%

Hairpins, towering trees and a year-round alpine village. The Mt Buller climb is a bucket list 15km challenge starting in Mirimbah. Savour those beautiful hairpins in the last 5km, but don’t peak too early – Hell Corner awaits. Got more in the tank? Ride past the official finish all the way to The Arlberg for celebration drinks and lunch.

DINNER PLAIN 

Distance 42.8km, Rise 943m, Grade Average 2%, Grade Max 11%

Get into the rhythm and watch the tarmac unfold over 42km on the longest of the 7 Peaks Challenge routes. Make it a weekend and stay in cosy Dinner Plain Alpine Village to tick off the Mt Hotham 7 Peaks Challenge on day two or bring your mountain bike as well to explore the Dinner Plain MTB Park.

LAKE MOUNTAIN 

Distance 20.9km, Rise 932m, Grade Average 4%, Grade Max 10%

At only 1.5 hours from Melbourne, Lake Mountain is easy to knock over in a morning (easy is a relative term). But why rush it when you can savour it? Ride through incredible tall timber before the mountain ash gives way to the snow gums and alpine views. Make a weekend of it in vibrant Marysville to enjoy the eats and sights.

MT BAW BAW 

Distance 6.5km, Rise 741m, Grade Average 11.4%, Grade Max 20.6%

Mt Baw Baw’s short climb is infamous for its leg burning gradients.

Rising 741 metres in just 6.5km, you’ll be hunting for more gears as soon as you start. The thrilling steep descent makes it all worth it. Start in Tanjil Bren or Noojee for a scenic warm-up before hitting the hill.
