Billions of dollars of gold were extracted from this area, once known as the Ovens and Indigo Goldfields.
The gold fever that gripped Victoria from the 1850's until the early 20th century left an indelible mark on the region. Today, the legacy of the goldrush remains – from perfectly preserved streetscapes and buildings, astonishing water races, countless mine shafts, pioneer graves and Chinese Burning Towers.
